Latest reforms to the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) could result in a significant boost to the anaerobic digestion industry. In this milestone legislative reform, the RHI announced that a tariff of 5.6p/KWh will be fixed for 20 years following site commissioning.
Subsidies from the RHI have provided much needed support to (and enabled growth in) the renewable heat industry. The RHI has also generated a positive impact on the development of renewables facilities, financing research and development in technology. Without this support, it is unlikely that sectors like the green gas industry would have achieved an output of nearly 4TWh per year.
The Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association predicts that, with the correct support, renewable resources could replace almost 15% of the UK’s gas usage. PRM hope to see that figure rise, as the UK continues to meet renewable energy targets in the future.
RHI generates siginificant changes
It is expected that the RHI will cease to operate in around 3 years time, having achieved significant changes within the industry. Fears that a decrease in support would spell disaster for further development may be alleviated with this latest news, bringing stability and reassurance for those in the industry.
A boost for small business
The reform has also announced that there will be a production cap of 40,000MWh, meaning smaller firms will have a fighting chance amongst the bigger players. This will ensure businesses like PRM can continue to develop new technologies: from improving farm based Anaerobic Digestion with the Bio QZ, to the optimisation of production in food waste plants by integrating the Runi de-packaging machine.
We are constantly developing our processes and technology to create better solutions for waste management and renewables. This much anticipated announcement provides the assurance needed to the industry that renewable heat sources will continue to grow for years to come.
