BioDigester Proving its Worth

The BioDigester has been busy at the test site in Oakhampton. Towards the end of last year the digester was put through its paces, trialling everything from whole onions, to potatoes and carrots, to mixed general food waste.

The onion trial started with the whole onions being put through a particle shredder. This output was then dewatered and digested in the BioDigester test unit. The cosh, which is the dry skin that comes off the onions as they come out of storage, was put straight into the digester. The results of this process were successful with the onion weight being reduced by over 90% and the cosh being reduced by around 40%. This was a very promising trial with the end product being an effective fuel for biomass heating.

The second trial carried out was on behalf of a wholesaler to the restaurant industry. Their varied food waste initially went through a shredder before entering the digester. This reduced the volume of their food waste by a massive 80%, exceeding their requirements and expectations.

The final BioDigester trial of 2016 was processing waste potatoes, carrots and parsnips. These were being used as low value stock feed but after being put through the BeD200 the resulting product can now be used as digestate biomass. It is stable and storable and has a much higher value as biomass fuel than it did as stock feed for animals.
