Sustainable Solutions For Middleton Lodge
Middleton Lodge install a PRM P500 Bio-Processor to recycle food waste on site, creating a sustainable closed loop system.
Middleton Lodge is a 200-acre estate, close to Richmond in North Yorkshire, which has been meticulously restored by the Allison family and their team over the past 16 years. The estate is now home to a 30-bedroom hotel, private event spaces and two award winning restaurants.
Rebuilding and conserving the estate sustainably is a passion for owner and Managing Director, James Allison. This is evident in the current environmentally friendly installations and systems including biomass boilers, electric kitchens, car charging units and their aerobic digester. Low food mile menus and a ‘recycle and reuse’ ethos also form an important part of the estate’s culture, the long term ambition for James and his team is to come as close as possible to being a zero waste business.
The aerobic digester, a PRM P500 Bio-Processor, plays a major role in this environmental objective. Mark Layfield, Maintenance Manager at Middleton Lodge, explains “the implementation of the Bio-Processor reduces food and organic waste across the estate in a sustainable and innovative way. The end substrate is used as a fuel for the sites biomass plant which produces hot water and heating for the estate, meaning we have a closed loop system for this type of waste.
“Not only does the Bio-Processor provide environmental improvements to the site, it is also reducing ongoing costs. The estate has five kitchens, the waste from these now goes straight into the Bio-Processor, previously we were paying to have this being taken away by a registered waste contractor.”
When looking for a more sustainable solution to diesel fuelled food waste collection, James Allison researched numerous options in the market before choosing the PRM P500 Bio-Processor. He explains his reasons, “the machine has a good reputation and provides many benefits, and PRM Waste Systems is known for their leading and reliable products.”
Talking about other benefits of the machine Mark continues “It is worth noting how easy to run and clean the machine is, after training and getting used to the system all of the team really like the ease of using the product. There is minimal manpower required which is great for our busy staff. It has been a great addition to the estate.”
As sustainability continues to be the driving force behind estate developments, the Bio-Processor will play a key role for years to come, adding to Middleton Lodge’s already impressive green credentials and environmental objectives.
